Educating underserved children in Maya communities in Guatemala

STARTS WITH YOU

Esperanza

TEACH supported this site from 2013 through 2016. The government has assumed support for the site.

A boat ride down a narrow channel and a 40-minute hike take visitors to Calix Nacimiento, where the Esperanza de Río Dulce school is located to serve students from that village and five others. The local community development organization has built dormitories for both girls and boys. By using government-developed videos, the three TEACH-supported teachers are able to provide in-depth instruction in all the subject areas required for this educational level.

Then it continues with a 40-minute hike through corn fields, up and down mountains, and over rivers to get to the village of Calix Nacimiento, where the school, “Esperanza de Río Dulce” (“Hope for the Río Dulce region”), is located.
